This renovation of the Virginia Headquarters for the Nature Conservancy is targeting Net Zero Energy and LEED Platinum. The design team’s approach to meeting these goals involves a combination of reducing energy use and improving the building envelope and systems. The renovation will include improving the insulation properties of the building shell and windows, upgrading the lighting to LED fixtures, using natural light where possible, upgrading the HVAC system to a high-efficiency VFR system that can react to and take advantage of varying occupancies and thermal loads throughout the building, adding ERV’s to recover energy from the ventilation air, upgrading the building’s domestic hot water heating system to heat pump water heaters, and adding a 50 kW solar PV array to the building roof and shading elements.
